An outstanding feature of the finalists for the National Venue Awards is the predominance of HBAA members on the shortlists.

21 HBAA members are finalists and between them they have achieved 28 nominations in 15 widely varied different categories in these prestigious and highly coveted awards.

Louise Goalen, Chair of the HBAA commented: “These figures clearly highlight the quality of venues within association membership, although with several competing against one another, sadly they can’t all win! HBAA is launching a new scheme designed to facilitate a daily or weekly job swap for both Agency and Venue members.

This initiative, ‘the Immersion Lab’, builds on the theme of the association’s collaboration strategy, and is intended to bring agencies and venues of all types closer together, allowing them to understand each other’s products and services, business needs and drivers, and client requirements.

Louisa Watson, Venue member Chair and Director of Marketing at Wyboston Lakes says, “We hope the Immersion Lab will allow the two parties to work closer together and gain a greater understanding and respect for each other’s place within the sector. This will in turn assist in moments of debate, negotiation and challenges.  Overall, the purpose is to build a much more holistic relationship between agents and venues, one that is supported by the whole organisation.”

The exchange can be set at any length between one day and one week.  The job positions exchanged can be flexible according to agency and venue requirements.

Louisa Watson and Alison Makosz, HBAA Executive Committee member and Group Head of Partner Relationships at Habicus Group, have been working on bringing the Lab to life as a result of an idea which came from the association’s Business Leaders workshop at the end of 2017. It was devised to help improve processes, drive best practice and support business relationships. Knowing first-hand the reality of how things work on the other side, especially if people are new to the industry, and understanding the challenges and needs that other organisations face, is imperative for the sector to thrive.

Sian Sayward, Supplier Partner Manager for meetings, accommodation and travel management agency Inntel, who have run this type of scheme before says, “The Immersion Lab concept is something long overdue within our industry and we are pleased to be able to support this new HBAA initiative. Inntel have worked with hotel and venue partners previously with our own ‘job swap’ scheme and found the results extremely beneficial, so the fact that this scheme will now be broadened and involve multiple agents and venues is very exciting.”

“In addition to the positive impact a scheme like this has on an organisation at a strategic level, the benefits that a scheme like this brings to individual employees are invaluable as they gain knowledge insights, lateral thinking and a wider perspective on ‘life outside the day job’.”

The scheme is now live.  Even before the launch it generated great interest. Members can register to participate and offer role swaps via the HBAA website, where their applications will be matched by the Immersion Lab team.

Warwick Conferences, a varied portfolio of five dedicated flexible conference and event venues within the University of Warwick, has announced that it will be opening its doors during the festive period for the first time ever.

Warwick Conferences latest venue The Slate, will be providing an exciting new Christmas party experience for exclusive, individual bookings for up to 200 guests.  During December 2018, The Slate’s 650 square metres of flat, contemporary and highly flexible event space will be transformed into a magical winter wonderland for £49 + VAT per person.

Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed into the festive spirit as they enter the venue through a fir-tree forest entrance, to be met by a warming mulled wine arrival drink. The evening will then proceed with a three course banquet of festive goodness, and conclude with a night of dancing and enjoying drinks from the venue’s igloo ‘ice’ bar.

The Slate is Warwick Conferences’ largest dedicated events venue and can cater for up to 400 guests. The venue was built with flexibility at the forefront of its design process, to cater for a variety of conferences, dinners and exhibitions. Now just over a year old, The Slate has so far received 1826 enquiries, at a significant value of £58,240,590. The venue is now looking to expand its expertise into the Christmas party market.

Paul Bartlett, Head of Sales at Warwick Conferences, comments:  “Whilst our venue offering remains distraction-free, the decision to open up The Slate to the corporate Christmas party market on an exclusive-use basis, makes complete sense for us. The Slate was built on our brand ethos of ‘anything is possible’ and turning dreams into a reality. The flexibility of this venue makes it the ideal blank canvas to dress with Christmas. This adornment of festive magic provides us with the perfect opportunity to showcase the versatility and potential of what The Slate can achieve, the fact it’s a fully flat, open space means there are no pillars or fixtures to get in the way.

“Our central location also makes us easily accessible for those travelling from the north and south, whether it be road or rail. Our on-site, hotel-styled bedrooms makes it the perfect location for those requiring overnight accommodation.”

As one of only ten of its type in the UK, The Slate is built from sustainable Breeam architecture, and offers an open, high wooden-crossbeam ceiling to offer the ultimate acoustic excellence. Fronted on a lake with a stunning glass façade, the venue’s lakeside location also offers guests a stunning viewpoint.

  • The Restaurant, The Horse Box and The Atrium at the heart of the changes
  • 500-years old Great Hall part of the arrival experience

One of the Cotswold’s finest country estates, Ellenborough Park, is delighted to unveil a stunning new look following substantial renovation works. With over 500 years of history, this former private stately home stands out as a jewel in the Cotswolds crown and now offers a revitalised and competitive quintessentially British experience.

The heart of its rebirth is centred around three new and different dining options; The Restaurant, The Horse Box and The Atrium, masterminded by newly appointed Executive Head Chef, David Williams, and complemented by a magnificent new entrance via The Great Hall.

Oliver Williams, General Manager explains “The substantial changes we have made will ensure that Ellenborough Park remains the finest hotel in the Cotswolds. With new dining options, a new chef, fresh interiors and a whole new arrival experience for guests we are confident that the new look conveys not only the modern approach that guests demand but also retains the heritage of a building that is over 500 years old. The refurbishment will also appeal to locals who will find The Horse Box especially inviting for lunch and dinner or an afternoon drink by the wood burning stove.”

The Restaurant

Headed up by newly appointed Executive Head Chef David Williams, the centrepiece of the re-launch is The Restaurant and the authentic culinary experience it now offers. The Restaurant will stand out from the ordinary and move away from the typical, exhausted fine dining offering and embrace a more flexible, natural style. It prides itself on offering local provenance and the finest British produce and ingredients, complimented by unquestionable service and a selection of sought after wines. The vision for the changes to The Restaurant is to firmly position the hotel as a complete luxury destination, for locals and those further afield, famed as much for its food and service as for its other attractive offerings. This will also be home to The Royalist room, an elegant private dining space for special occasions such as anniversaries and birthdays.

The Horse Box

Ellenborough Park boasts a wonderful new, hotel-owned country pub, The Horse Box, where race-goers can toast a glass by the wood burning stove, locals can meet for coffee and families can congregate for a hearty lunch. This new five-star country pub not only offers guests an informal relaxed dining option that so many top hotels lack, but also serves as a buzzing hotspot for locals to meet. Four legged friends are also most welcome.

The Atrium

Formerly the reception area, the new Atrium will be the heart of the hotel, characterised by eclectic interiors celebrating the hotel’s unrivalled horse racing heritage with a contemporary twist, and using the finest British sourced furniture. The Atrium’s statement Leonardo da Vinci wall mural and the use of antique brass studding on high quality leather reflects this, and enhances a subtle equestrian feel. Furnishings have a bohemian yet grand country house feel with a lived-in look to make guests feel instantly at home.
The Atrium has a vibrant atmosphere, changing harmoniously throughout the day from serving light lunches, to sweet treats in the afternoon and cocktails into the evening. The key feature is the launch of the pop up cocktail bar, where the hotel’s own mixologists can whisk up specialty masterpieces or guests can sample the must-try signature Ellenborough Park gin, curated by the nearby Cotswold Distillery.

The Great Hall

Guests arriving for the first time are now welcomed by a new entrance via the Great Hall. Over 500 years old and with walls that everyone wishes could talk, The Great Hall is a hugely impressive room. The Hall’s ancient walls are ordained in oil portraits of former visitors to the house and features a stand out fireplace and hidden nooks for guests to discover – serving as a very special place for afternoon tea.

About

Ellenborough Park boasts 61 individually designed bedrooms and suites, an all year round heated outdoor pool and a fitness suite together with an array of unique countryside activities including duck herding, Land Rover off-roading, falconry to husky sledding, clay-pigeon shooting, polo lessons (all available on request). This 15th century manor house set in 90 acres of Cotswolds countryside is the perfect setting for those looking for an idyllic way to holiday at home. Hotel rooms and suites will also be revitalised with in-room Nespresso machines and new bespoke furnishings.
