Barbican Business Events continues focus on sustainability

Sustainability has been a key part of the Barbican’s success story over the last two weeks with a win at the London Venue and Catering Awards, followed by the hosting of the Sustainable Events Show and the announcement of a major exhibition.

  • On Friday 19 November, the Barbican won the Sustainability Award at the London Venue and Catering Awards, beating off stiff competition from other well-known venues. In particular, the judges recognised the Barbican’s wide-ranging activities on sustainability, going beyond just the environment to include working with local communities and staff.
  • On Thursday 25 November, the Barbican hosted more than 800 attendees at the inaugural Sustainable Events Show, which included more than 50 exhibitors and 30 speakers from across the events industry.
  • On Tuesday 30 November, Barbican International Enterprises announced Our Time on Earth – a major exhibition opening in May 2022 celebrating the power of global creativity to transform the conversation around the climate emergency. Through art, design, science, music and philosophy, the exhibition presents a range of radical visions for the future of all species.

Jackie Boughton, Barbican Head of Events commented: “I am so proud of my whole team this week. Just a few weeks after the conclusion of COP 26, we are excited that our sustainability efforts to date have been recognised by peers and industry experts. Winning this award goes beyond just our business events department to incorporate the whole of the Barbican’s wider team, particularly those working tirelessly to improve every element of our infrastructure and facilities. We recognise we've much further to go, but we're dedicated to finding more ways to address our environmental impact and achieve our target of reducing carbon emissions from our own operations to net zero by 2027.”

Sustainable Event Show organiser, Wesley Mendy, backed this up by saying: “What better place to hold our inaugural show, just days after the venue was crowned the best in the business by an industry leading panel of judges. The Barbican supported us throughout the entire organisation of a carbon-neutral event – creating a real-life demonstration of their award-winning capabilities.”

RED BULL RACING MARKS THE RETURN OF THE MEETINGS AND EVENTS MARKET WITH BUMPER END TO THE YEAR ...........

7th December 2021, UK: Red Bull Racing is set to mark a record-breaking year for its conference and events team, as C&E occupancy levels at the team’s upgraded Milton Keynes facilities match pre-pandemic figures.

A recent multi-million pound investment project in the Red Bull Racing site, has seen the addition of a private entrance road with dedicated security, as well as an additional 100 parking spaces onsite. The changes have focused on making access to the site smooth and seamless, ensuring that all onsite visitors are afforded the same first-class experience.

Since restrictions were lifted this summer, the team have worked hard to maintain Covid-safe procedures, while meeting the growing demand for both events and tour bookings, and - between July and December - they have confirmed double the number of delegate and visitor bookings compared to the same period in 2019.

The Team’s Director of Events and Hospitality, Nick Kenton, commented: “We have been delighted with how quickly conferences and events have returned to our venue and we’ve worked hard to ensure they return in a safe environment that is mindful of the current climate. During the past 18 months we’ve also invested in our facilities to ensure that our customer experience is the very best it can be. It has been a privilege to welcome our guests back through our doors to enjoy a first-class experience and give them a glimpse into one of the world’s top sporting teams,” he added.

Across the site are a range of innovative and immersive spaces able to cater for a variety of conferences and events. The MK-7 venue centres around a breath-taking auditorium that houses the Team’s collection of race cars dating back to 2005. Complementing the central event space is a stylish boardroom and 40-capacity mezzanine area, all decorated with details of the Team’s history. While the space can be configured to suit clients’ requirements, it can be hired exclusively for up to 450 guests for a reception, with the boardroom sized to seat 22.

Named in tribute to its Buckinghamshire home, MK-7 offers a unique setting for brand activations, receptions, dinners, conferences and intimate meetings, and the recent investment in the site marks the Team’s increasing commitment to the conference and events sector.
