Wyboston Lakes Resort’s team have been recognised in the Meetings Industry Association’s (mia) highly sought-after miaList 2021, which recognises inspiring and exceptional individuals in the business meetings and events industry.

Simon McMahon, General Manager for Venues, and Linden Beattie, Hotel General Manager, both members of the resort’s senior management team, were recognised as the Best Events and Operations Team. The pair were key to getting the business ready for reopening after lockdown, launching the resort’s comprehensive Covid Policy, running a Government Pilot event, and engaging and training staff to bring them back from furlough.

The judges commented on the pair’s “commitment and loyalty” and how they “went far above and beyond for their clients which simply won them more and more key worker business during the pandemic. They should be very proud of themselves and no wonder their team delivers – they are an inspiration.”

Rachel Bradshaw, the Resort’s Front of House Manager, was also recognised in the list. The judges said that Bradshaw was an “unbelievable asset to the business particularly during the pandemic. She has shown resilience, adaptability, kindness, ceaseless energy and enthusiasm for her role and for her venue. Her maturity, integrity, and capability in making decisions shone through for the judges; she has without a doubt showcased her future potential within the sector.”

Simon Coleman, Deputy Property Maintenance Manager, was shortlisted for his outstanding contributions to the business during an unprecedented time.

Simon McMahon said: “It is very exciting to be recognised in this year’s miaList, particularly following an extremely challenging time for all staff at Wyboston Lakes Resort. Our venues were open during the pandemic and keeping them running smoothly and safely was paramount, so we feel very proud to be recognised.”

Linden Beattie added: “We are very grateful for this recognition and for the kind words from the judges.”

The rigorous judging process for the mia list included a written application, followed by interviews with a judging panel.

mia conference ignites venuedirectory.com to put sustainable venues

on the corporate buying list....

From the beginning of December 2021 every venue search on the venuedirectory.com site will put sustainable venues at the top of all venue results provided, both UK and international.

Venues that are accredited by Green Tourism’s Green Meetings, EcoSmart, Green Key and IACC will immediately be included, and venues approved by other globally recognised brand sustainability accreditation schemes will be added in the near future.

Michael Begley, CEO of venuedirectory.com commented; “We’ve done this because it is vitally important for everyone’s benefit. It is essential. We listen to our customers and this is what they are telling us. The mia Ignite conference just affirmed in my mind that this is the right thing to do. It's right for our customers and for the planet.”

He continued “Matthias Schultze of the German Convention Bureau told us that 63% of meeting planners regarded sustainability as very important or important; Cate Trotter of Insider Trends confirmed that it is the trend that the industry needs to get on board with and focus its efforts on, and multigeneration expert Dr Eliza Filby called it the ‘Mega Trend’.”

Michael added: “Both venue managers and corporate meeting planners and buyers attending the event told me that sustainability is the number one project on their ‘to-do’ list and increasing the visibility of sustainable venues on the venue sourcing process is essential.”

venuedirectory.com has gathered and continues to add all the relevant sustainability accreditations for venues. The list is growing exponentially with thousands of venues already included.

Green Tourism, which has been working with venuedirectory.com for a long time, launched its Green Meetings standard earlier this year.

Scott Maclean, managing director of Green Tourism, commented; “We introduced the Green Meetings Standard in response to requests from the industry to help venues prove they are taking their environmental responsibilities seriously. It’s great to see this new initiative from Michael and the team at venuedirectory.com which puts sustainability at the forefront of the industry and reflects exactly what the corporate buyers are telling us they want from venues.”

Michael Begley summed up: “I am delighted that we have got the community starting to prioritise this important facet of our industry. It's something I have been campaigning for since 2012. We are committed to not making this a competitive advantage and are happy to share our list of sustainability accredited venues absolutely free of charge with any agency or corporate body that wants them.”

Tourism Alliance and other updates ....

During COP26 there is an urgent call to action for the event sector. BVEP asks all members and their communities to make a net zero carbon commitment HERE.

This initiative is supported by UNFCCC and SME Climate Hub (who are part of The Race to Zero) and is the only way the event supply chain can receive free resources to support action that future clients will demand. Through this initiative it has been possible to track that 2% of all business Race to Zero Commitments have come from the event sector supply chain. An increase in commitments will result in an increase in government and business focus on events as part of the solution to reaching net zero targets. For more information on the history to this initiative - https://www.positiveimpactevents.com/resources/climate-action-framework-for-the-event-sector.

You will find attached Reinsurance scheme FAQs. May we ask your feedback please as to how the Reinsurance scheme is being received. What is the take-up and what reservations are there from organisers and planners to the scheme? A meeting is to be held with the DCMS team responsible for the Scheme and it would be helpful to have contact with any business with first-hand experience of applying for the insurance or with those that have decided the insurance does not satisfy the purpose for which it was set to up to do.
